- Before working in laboratory environments, researchers must take relevant safety, laboratory, and other necessary courses depending on the research.
- Talk to your lab supervisor, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and the BSF director (bsf@utoronto.ca) to determine which courses you need to take.
- Animal users must be listed on an approved protocol and complete all training components prior to starting animal work.
- The training is a 3-part process composed of online theoretical and hands-on species-specific training, AUP/SOP/Documentation review, and attendance of orientation.
- A checklist for students is available at the bottom of this page.
- Depending on the scope of your work, you need to take a combination of the following training modules:

Signing Up for EHS Training
- Ensure you are connected to the University of Toronto’s Internet or Ethernet system
- Go to https://ehs.utoronto.ca/training/my-ehs-training/
- Log in and register for necessary courses
- You should receive an email with a PDF containing a link to add the course to Quercus
- If you do not receive the email, you can click on “Full Course Details” on your EHS dashboard to download the PDF containing the link to add the course to Quercus
Signing Up for DCM Training
- Go to https://research.utoronto.ca/ethics-animal-research-teaching/mandatory-animal-user-training
- Select “Training Request Form”
- Complete form and receive signature from PI
- Send the form to Ryan (ryan.ruan@mail.utoronto.ca) to schedule your training
Please note that additional training is provided on an ongoing basis as necessary to address revisions to regulations, animal care issues, changes in best practice, or at the request of researchers.
